Amazon Reloaded for WordPress
Download Amazon Reloaded for WordPress
Are you frequently looking for links on Amazon.com to show off books, movies, or music that you’re interested in? Are you an Amazon Associate looking to make a few bucks from your blog? Do you just want an easy way to insert Amazon product images into your posts without leaving WordPress?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you’ve come to the right place. With my easy to use plugin, Amazon Reloaded for WordPress, you can grab product links and images directly from Amazon without ever leaving your post screen. As an added bonus, you can set up your Amazon Associate id to ensure that you get the commissions you deserve from sending people to buy items.
So what would you expect to pay for this plugin? $97? $147? More? Well, you won’t be paying any of them because this plugin is completely and unequivocally free. That’s right, you can experience the convenience of searching Amazon from within WordPress for the low, low price of nothing.
How To
The Amazon Reloaded for WordPress plugin is amazingly simple to setup and use. Just follow the following steps and you’ll be ready to go in no time at all.
- Download the plugin from the official plugin repository
- Using FTP or some other method, place the plugin inside your
wp-content/pluginsfolder - Activate the plugin from the ‘Plugins’ menu
- (optional) Enter your locale and Associate ID on the settings page located in
Settings/Amazon Reloaded - Start writing a post or page and when you need to insert something, scroll down to the Amazon Reloaded meta box
- Enter your search term and press the Search button or hit enter
- Click on the category headers to browse the products found
- To insert a link, click the product name. To insert an image, hover over insert image and select Small, Medium, or Large
That’s it. You’re ready to start inserting items into your posts. Good luck. If you make a few bucks, please don’t forget to donate to my plugin development fund
Support
As stated above this plugin is released completely free. It’s release is not a for-profit venture and as such, no guarantee is provided on the performance or functionality of this plugin. While I will do my best to help you, you must either leave a comment here or contact me directly describing your problem in as much detail as you can.
If I have time to help you, I will. However, I am usually busy with paid plugin development work and, seeing as I need to pay for my rent, utilities, and other things now that I’m out of college, that stuff comes first. You can rent an hour of my time to look at your problems with any of my free plugins for $60. That gets you a guarantee of spending at least an hour straight on your problem. In my experience, most problems can be fixed in that amount of time.
Changelog
This changelog is only valid for versions 2.1.0 and above. All changes before then are committed in the appropriate SVN log on wordpress.org.
Version 3.1.0
- Added support for i18n
- Fixed some CSS issues so IE7 users can actually insert images now
- Added some better JavaScript event handling. Thanks The Doctor What
Version 2.1.0
- Added support for different countries
- Fixed cURL problem which was affecting people with safe_mode or open_basedir active
- Fixed typos and other minor bugs
Known Problems
While I try to fix all bugs, there are some things that are just particulars of the operation of the plugin. Please be warned this section gets somewhat technical.
Gobbledy Gook as Response
The reason this is happening is because Amazon cannot access the XSLT file it needs to in order to transform it’s XML response into HTML. The file that Amazon needs to access is stored on your server and you need to make sure that Amazon can see it . My file can be seen here.
There are a couple of reasons the file may be inaccessible.
- You are running a local server for testing
- Your wp-content directory is blocked from serving request via a .htaccess file
If you can visit http://mysite.com/wp-content/plugins/amazon-reloaded-for-wordpress/resources/amazon-reloaded.xslt without problem, then it might just be a hiccup in the connection. Shoot me an email and we’ll try to work it out
August 28th, 2008
Wordpress 2.6.1 and Amazon Reloaded 3.0.2 is broken for me. If I type a search term (such as “David Byrne”) I get a bunch of gobledygook:
[Edited out gobbledygook]

@Doctor – I sent you an email. Thanks for the input!
August 29th, 2008
I just started looking at Amazon Reloaded and I’m having the same problem as @Doctor with version 3.1.0 and WP 2.6.1. Can you provide any details about how to fix it?
Thanks for the work.
August 29th, 2008
@zobie – Please read the note that I added above right before the comments section.
August 29th, 2008
Do you know if it might be possible to pull in item descriptions as well? Or for that matter, ratings, reviews, etc?
If you think it is possible, but that it’s more in the paid plugin development field, please feel free to ping me and I’d be happy to discuss your terms for this capability.
August 30th, 2008
@IndieLab – That might be possible, but that’s kind of an involved thing. I’ll get in touch.
August 30th, 2008
Cool, I’ll wait:)
September 2nd, 2008
Just downloaded and installed the plugin. I’m using WP 2.6. I can access the plugin settings to input my Associates ID, however, if I try to write a new post I get the following error.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_enqueue_style() in /home/content/w/a/x/waxwing1/html/think/wp-content/plugins/amazon-reloaded-for-wordpress/Amazon-Reloaded.php on line 88
Any ideas?

False alarm. Turns out I needed to upgrade from WP 2.5 to WP 2.6 for it to work. Seems like a great product!
September 2nd, 2008
@John – Glad you got that worked out. Thanks for the compliment.
September 19th, 2008
Nice tool and thanx for the work — but the localization seems not to be perfect :-(
For example: I use german amazon and search for “Star Wars” / DVD — there will be only 4 items. If i use amazon directly, there more than 3 pages… Any solution? Or did i something wrong..? (of course i have filled in the settings ;-)
September 19th, 2008
@Oberlehrer – The search results are limited to 3 items per category by the Amazon API. If you want to get a different item then the ones returned, then you need to specify more keywords from the title. That is a limitation of the Amazon API.
September 20th, 2008
Aha — it’s not a bug, it is a feature ;-) Thanx for the explanation.

Great plugin Nick, it really makes taking advantage of the amazon affiliate program much easier, so thank you!
Weird thing, the plugin was working just fine for a while, but now only returns the so called ‘Gobbledy Gook’. I went through your comment section and had no problem reaching the XSLT file, so I am wondering if you have any other ideas?
I deactivated and reactived the plugin to no help. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks
November 2nd, 2008
Great plugin, thank you.
Is it possible to add support for text links, I don’t always want to use an image.
Also, just wondering what the bits in the link are for.
If I generate a link directly in amazon, I get a link like:
Edit: Link removed
but using the plugin I get a link like:
Edit: Link removed
November 2nd, 2008
@X-Factor Blog – Thanks for the thanks. It is possible to use text links, just click on the product name and one will be inserted. The links are grabbed directly from returns from API service calls to Amazon, so I can’t tell you in detail what they are for. If you’re curious, you can consult Amazon’s API declarations.
November 2nd, 2008
Thanks for the quick reply nick.
I thought that link was just a link to the page that the image would point to & was right clicking/opening in new tab to see it, didn’t realise clicking it would insert it into the post.
Fantastic work.
November 5th, 2008
By any chance have you ran any test on WP 2.6.3 – Please say Yes!
November 5th, 2008
@travis – While I haven’t explicitly tested on WP 2.6.3, I’m sure it is fine. The only differences between 2.6.2 and 2.6.3 was the Snoopy library vulnerability was fixed. This library doesn’t rely on that API at all, so you should be ok.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Nothing but gobbledygook in 2.7, probably because the blog is behind a .htaccess protected portion of the site. Any way around this aside from re-writing the plugin to expect the file elsewhere?
Thanks,
Bill
January 8th, 2009
@Bill – You’re exactly right on why it’s not working. You will have to rewrite the plugin to look elsewhere for the file. I’m planning on rewriting the plugin soon, though, so you wouldn’t have to worry about it. I’ll be posting updates here on the blog.
January 8th, 2009
Thanks for the quick response Nick.
I’ve already changed the path to the .xslt file to the site root where it can be accessed, and the plugin works great! I was thinking about adding the location of the .xslt file to the config options, but if you’re planning on updating the plugin I won’t mess with it.
Thanks again,
Bill

January 18th, 2009
@Jesslyn – Absolutely. Add your own text as you want!
January 23rd, 2009
Hi Nick. I’m trying out your plugin for the first time, and the links work great. However, on my site, I use amazon’s little javascript, which they call “Product Previews” (where a little amazon window pops up when your cursor hovers over the link.) Your links bring up the box when I hover over them, but no content appears. Know the reason why?
I have my own associate link template which I use, which is this:
,
and it works fine with the script. Would be nice to have it automatic, though.
Thanks.

great plug-in; glad to see continued development and evolution.
not sure why, but i was actually able to get the basic functions of the old amazon plugin to work ok with WP 2.6.1–somehow; i’m not a programmer and didn’t modify the code. for the time being, i might have to stick with it for two (and a half reasons); take them merely as food for thought or constructive criticism, whichever sounds more friendly to you :)
1) i only ever post music/movies/game related amazon results, and was easily able to edit which categories were searched with the old plugin. i can’t see any easy or simple way to do that with ‘reloaded’, and always seem to get results for “kitchen” no matter what. i got a poster of bono in the kitchen results once.
2) i can’t modify or edit the output when the results are sent to the editor–or at least get it to properly work after tinkering with the functions in the .js file. it was pretty easy to modify the html being output in the old plugin, simply dropping in the +href+ tokens and whatnot where they belong; as easy as creating a custom BBCode for phpBB3.
.5) this isn’t your fault, i understand, but the old one returns so many more search results ;)
so, not sure if either 1 or 2 are things that could potentially be options in the settings panel for future versions, but i’ll keep my eye on this and hope to someday upgrade my makeshift, hobbled old amazon plugin. thanks again for all your efforts toward a more robust offering of free wordpress add-ons!
January 28th, 2009
@aaron – Thanks for the constructive criticism. In the next release, which I’ve been meaning to work on for a while now, I plan on adding a bunch of features that have been recommended to make it a more functional and useful plugin. Hopefullly there will be an upgrade by the middle of February.

March 10th, 2009
Hi Nick,
If it helps, I see two options here:
1. Provide your own code to replace http://www.assoc-amazon.com/s/link-enhancer?tag=&o=1 and link-enhancer-common.js and adapt the code to enhance your link style. Specifically, see this line:
var redirect = new RegExp(“^http://www\\.amazon\\.(com|ca|co\\.jp|de|fr|co\\.uk)/(exec/obidos|o)/redirect”, “i”);
2. Adhere to the Amazon enhancement URL structure (see above)
I’m glad you are up for this. Many people will thank you, I’m sure!
Cheers,
Gal
March 10th, 2009
Oh, yes, if you opt for #1, we’re done, but there’s possible maintenance later. If you opt for #2, would you please provide something to migrate the current link style to the new?
Thank you so much,
Gal

Hi!
Seems like a good plug to get Amazon ads into posts but I can only see how to add the Amazon product Image or Text to the post. Is there a way to add the image and text context ad the same that you get when generating the html from the Amazon site. ie with the frame and button that says Buy from Amazon etc?
Am I missing something obvious?
Thanks! janie
July 26th, 2009
@Janie – The intention is not to get Amazon ads into posts, it is to generate links to products. There is no way to do what you’re asking with the plugin.
July 26th, 2009
oh man, I swear I had my affiliate ID set before I started making links, but apparently it didn’t stick. is there a way for me to see which posts have my affiliate id in them? And then after that how do I (easily) edit the links to have my affiliate link ?
or is this something that happens behind the scenes and I can change my affiliate id after making a link in a post?
July 26th, 2009
@tiki god – Sorry, bro. There’s no way to retroactively add the affiliate ID. You’ll have to do it manually.

Now that it’s gone, I’m lost!
Anyway, thanks for the good times :-)
August 18th, 2009
It can be fixed easily, I just don’t know when I’m going to get the time to do so.
August 19th, 2009
This stopped working for me yesterday. Same as Masa and Stephen described.
I thought it was when I upgraded Wordpress to 2.8.4. But it seems more likely that Amazon changed their API…
August 19th, 2009
Nick — If you can just tell me what needs changing/fixing, please let me know so I can at least fix it until you make an official fix. Thanks!
August 19th, 2009
Amazon changed their API and stipulated that requests need to be signed. If you want to go ahead and do that, you can do so because the plugin is open source. If anyone gets it working, let me know and I’ll put it in the official version. I just don’t have time to do it right now.
August 20th, 2009
It appears another key is required to sign the request, but your code only provides AWSAccessKeyId. It looks like we’ll need the Secret Access Key as well.
August 20th, 2009
Both Access key ID and Secret Access Key would be required.
These can be obtained from the site: Amazon Web Service (free of charge).
August 20th, 2009
Yep. I got it to sort of work so far using my own keys, but it appears the current xslt stylesheet isn’t working right. I get get results without using it (which are useless in the plugin) but once I apply the stylesheet, I get a blank set of results.
August 20th, 2009
I take that back — I had something else going on.
Anyway, for anyone impatient like me for a fix, here’s one that works:

Hi Gudlyf,
I tried to test your code, but failed as follows:
I removed all of the original Amazon reloaded code and replaced it with your new code.
Then entered both Access key ID and Secret Access Key into your code.
After the modification, I enabled the plugin, entered Associate ID, and selected country = Japan.
But nothing can be found.
Anything wrong?

Masa –
In the code, change the following lines:
$request = “http://xml-us.amznxslt.”;
$request .= $this->options[ 'tld' ];
To just:
$request = “http://xml-jp.amznxslt.com”;

Andre –
In the code, change the following lines:
$request = “http://xml-us.amznxslt.”;
$request .= $this->options[ 'tld' ];
To just:
$request = “http://xml-de.amznxslt.com”;

I found this in the file “Amazon-Reloaded.php”
$request = “http://ecs.amazonaws.”;
$request .= $this->options[ 'tld' ];
and changed it to
$request = “http://xml-de.amznxslt.com”;
Now i get the following error and the complete WP-Page doesn’t work:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘:’ in /is/htdocs/…/…/wp-content/plugins/amazon-reloaded-for-wordpress/Amazon-Reloaded.php on line 206

Starting with the fix at:
http://www.cliqueclack.com/code/2009/08/20/a-fix-for-amazon-reloaded-for-wordpress-and-amazons-new-api/
I found that my hosting service is using PHP 4, so I made the following change:
In sign_url, change:
$signstr = base64_encode(hash_hmac('sha256', $signstr, $this->secret, true));
to the following:
if (version_compare(PHP_VERSION,'5.1.2','>='))
{
$signstr = base64_encode(hash_hmac('sha256', $signstr, $this->secret, true));
}
else if (function_exists('mhash') && defined('MHASH_SHA256'))
{
$signstr = base64_encode(mhash(MHASH_SHA256, $signstr, $this->secret));
}
This code is based on code I found at AWS:
http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/thread.jspa?threadID=35172&tstart=105
Also, I noticed that parse_url created an empty $host. So in a bit of expediency I hard coded:
$host = "xml-us.amznxslt.com";
After that, everything started working!
Thanks Nick Ohrn for a great plugin and to Keith at Cliqueclack for their fix!

I’m not a programmer so most of what I’ve read here is about as clear as mud. However, I downloaded your fix, inserted my Amazon access key and special word, and added my affiliate code in the set-up section within Word Press.
Then I tried to use the plugin to add Amazon products. It appeared to be working but then I didn’t get any products from my search, but I got this error instead:
>
Warning: parse_url() expects exactly 1 parameter, 2 given in /……/wp-content/plugins/amazon-reloaded-for-wordpress/Amazon-Reloaded.php on line 276
1D7WX0HFMVMBNTVZJX4ZAWS.MinimumParameterRequirementYour request should have atleast 1 of the following parameters: Signature, Timestamp.

Can you help me with this? Here is what lines 276-278 look like to me:
>
function sign_url( $url ){
$host = parse_url($url,PHP_URL_HOST);
$timestamp = gmstrftime(“%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S.000Z”);
$url = $url . “&Timestamp=” . $timestamp;

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried everything, starting with the updated code and the hints I’ve found on http://www.cliqueclack.com but it doesn’t work for me in Germany. I think I’ve inserted probably something wrong or in the wrong way … but I can’t make it out on my own. So I’m hoping for an offical update soon.

@Sal and everybody – You’re in luck. I just released the new version which is awesome. You should grab it!

I’m seeing an error with the latest release that has to do with my not having DOM compiled into PHP5 (I see it was configured with –disable-dom for some reason):
Class ‘DOMDocument’ not found
And, of course, I don’t really have the capability on my server to recompile PHP5.
The old version still works with my changes, so I’ll stick with that for now. Just FYI in case you run into the error.

@Gudlyf – I’m so sorry that the new version didn’t work for you. I no longer wanted to process the returned XML on the client side (as it was pretty slow) so I moved the processing server side. Looks like that killed the plugin for you.

Hey Nick, thanks again for the great plugin. I tried to upgrade today and when I try and activate the plugin I get this error message.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /homepages/15/d91758679/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/amazon-reloaded-for-wordpress/amazon-reloaded-for-wordpress.php on line 14
Any help on this? Thanks so much.

@Brian – Are you running PHP4 or PHP5? This plugin requires PHP5 now.
October 5th, 2009
@Nick
That did it. My server was trying to run it under PHP4, and adding the line:
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
to my .htaccess file fixed it right up. Thank you again!

@Brian – Glad to hear it :)

Hi Nick. I’m trying your latest version on a new server now and, though I’m certain I’m using the correct API and Secret keys, the ‘Test’ button reports they are generating an error or are incorrect.
Any clue how I can figure out what’s being reported back as that error? Thanks!

@Gudlyf – Post a screenshot and I’ll try to check it out.

Here you go. I blotted out the codes for obvious reasons, but I assure you they are entered correctly.

Any guidance Nick?

Nick — Disregard. I’m a dope and swapped the secret key and API keys around. Duh.
December 8th, 2009
@Gudly4 – Thank goodness. I felt bad because I didn’t get back to you, but I couldn’t figure out what could be going wrong on your end.

Hi,
Can anyone help me – I enter my 2 keys and affiliate ID, save them, and click ’save and test’. It tells me my details are correct and I should have no trouble searching for products, meanwhile my details have disappeared. I then go to ‘add new post’ and get this message: You have not yet set up your Amazon credentials. In order to search for products using the Amazon Reloaded for WordPress plugin, you should do so now.
I spent an hour entering and re-entering them, but to no avail!
Has anyone got any advice on what’s going wrong?
Thanks,
Mary

@Mary I’ll take a look and let you know what I find.

Great Nick, thanks. When you say you’ll take a look at it,
do you mean my site? If you need login details etc, drop me
an email.
Thanks again,
Mary
