Amazon Reloaded for WordPress Updated

I’ve just updated my Amazon Reloaded for WordPress plugin. The update includes the following changes:

  • Improved code quality
  • Improved error handling
  • New settings inputs for Amazon secret and API keys
  • New interface for display search results
  • Better formatting of search form
  • Support for Amazon’s new request signature requirements

I’m happy to get this out there and want to thank the individuals who stepped in when I was too busy to update it.  Thanks!

Bashify – A Fun WordPress Plugin

I’ve been working on something the past few days that I thought would be kind of fun.  I decided to recreate a (very) limited Bash shell that can be implemented on any WordPress install with the activation of a single plugin and the addition of a single link.  I’ve decided to put the very alpha version into play here on this site and am looking for feedback.

If you’re a total geek like me who spends half his day behind the command line, why don’t you go ahead and click that link up in the main nav that says Bashify Me!  You’ll soon see why the link is there and what happens.  Commands work as you expect with some limitations.  You can’t do “..” with cd as I didn’t want to deal with that headache.  You can’t make files or dirs (obviously) and the commands aren’t very liberal with their accepted input.  Play around, though, and I think you’ll like it (if you’re awesome).

I’ll be doing a full write up about the plugin, what it does, and how it does it, over on Plugin-Developer.com within a couple of days.

Design Contest? I’m Entering!

WP Web Host, a hosting company specializing in WordPress sites, is having a contest to find the best WordPress design. There are five categories:

  • Clean and Minimalist
  • Retro and Vintage
  • Grunge
  • Hand Drawing Style
  • Modern and Elegant

I’m entering in the Clean and Minimalist category because I think I have a good shot at winning. I think my theme is minimalist enough to focus entirely on the content and pretty enough to not be an eyesore.

The HTML is clean and lean, and the CSS file is meager 4 kb. The site loads quickly and comments are pretty good looking. The best example is on my Amazon Reloaded for WordPress page.

Introducing NickOhrn.com Version 3.0

Greetings all, and thanks for visiting. Today, I’m introducing version 3.0 of my personal website. The design has been updated and I’ve tried to go back and edit posts that were missing information or formatted improperly.

The goal with this design was simplicity. The last design was just too garish for my tastes. I didn’t like the color scheme after I lived with it for a while, and I feel the design was bad enough to drive people away.

Now, I’m going for a minimalistic approach. The colors are muted and tame, the layout is simple, and there are no graphics anywhere in the design. It should load fast and look clean.

I’m still toying with the footer. Widgets will go there at some point, but I’m not sure when. If there are any obvious bugs, please help me out and contact me and let me know. Be sure to let me know what you think of the new design, too!

Minor Site Design Changes

As you can probably see, I’ve changed the site design slightly after a little bit of design and analysis. Briefly, I’d like to go through the changes I’ve made and, where appropriate, point out why I did the things that I did.

First, I removed the big “NickOhrn.com” text from the top of the page. After looking at that for a while, I figured that it was more in the way than anything else. It was meant as site identification, but if you can’t tell you’re on my site just by looking at my amazing profile picture in the upper left, there, then I think we have bigger problems.

Second, I changed the underlying grid dimensions slightly. It was based on a 960 pixel wide originally, with positioning and layout code of my own design. However, I found a wonderful 960 pixel grid system the other day, and decided to go ahead and rewrite NickOhrn.com to use it for fun. It worked out pretty well, and I’m much more happy with the consistency across browsers now. I will probably be using this grid system for most of my web design work from here on out.

Finally, I change the way that categories and tags are displayed in the footer. They are now each one long list, as opposed to the dual-column display that I had going on before. To me, this seems easier to scan and just looks better.

As always, please let me know what you think of the changes in the comments.
